    The Effect of G-ORS Along With Rice Soup in the Treatment of Acute Diarrhea in Children: A Single-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial

    Background: The world health organization guidelines for treatment of diarrhea in children emphasize on continued feeding together with prescription of oral rehydration solution (ORS) and supplementary zinc therapy. However, conflicting viewpoints exist regarding the optimal diet and dietary ingredients for children with diarrhea. Moreover, few studies have investigated the effect of rice soup along with ORS in the treatment of this disease. Objectives: This study aimed to explore effects of simultaneous taking of glucose oral rehydration solution (G-ORS) and rice soup in the treatment of acute diarrhea in 8 to 24-month-old children. Patients and Methods: This single-blind controlled clinical trial was conducted in the pediatric ward of 22nd of Bahman hospital, Gonabad, Iran between June 2013 and February 2014. Forty children aged 8-24 months with acute diarrhea were randomly assigned into an intervention group (G-ORS plus rice soup group) comprising 20 babies and a control group (G-ORS) of 20 children based on balanced blocking randomization. The variables under investigation were diarrhea duration, patient hospitalization, need for intravenous (IV) fluids and stool output frequency. Data was analyzed using independent samples t and chi-square test. Results: At the end of study, the time for treating acute watery diarrhea in the intervention and control groups were 21.10 ± 8.81 and 34.55 ± 5.82 hours (P < 0.001) and hospital stay were 34.05 ± 6.62 and 40.20 ± 6.32 hours (P = 0.005). Moreover, stool output frequency were 4.20 ± 0.95 and 8.00 ± 1.37 (P < 0.001) in the first 24 hours, and 2.18 ± 0.60 and 2.80 ± 0.76 (P = 0.03) in the second 24 hours of treatment in intervention and control groups, respectively. Conclusions: Rice soup regimen was highly effective and inexpensive in the treatment of acute diarrhea in children. Thus, in addition to the common treatment by G-ORS, rice soup can be consumed simultaneously with G-ORS

    Effects of starvation and re-feeding on some hematological and plasma biochemical parameters of juvenile Persian sturgeon, Acipenser persicus Borodin, 1897

    The effect of starvation and re-feeding was investigated on growth, hematology and biochemical parameters in juvenile Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus). Three hundred and seventy five fish (108±0.63 g) were divided into five feeding groups. The control group (C) was fed to satiation three times a day during the experiment. The four groups were starved for 1 (W1), 2 (W2), 3 (W3), and 4 (W4) weeks respectively, and then fed to satiation during a 4 week re-feeding period. The results indicated that some parameters including final weight, specific growth rate ,body weight increase, plasma enzymes (ALT, Alanine aminotransferase, AST, Aspartat aminotransferase and ALP, Alkaline phosphatise, hematological parameters [Mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH)]were significantly affected by feeding regimes. The plasma cortisol, hematocrit, lymphocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, and monocytes were not affected by starvation and subsequent re-feeding. These findings showed that short term starvations had no significant negative effects on growth performance, most biochemical and hematological parameters in Persian sturgeon could recover when re-feeding resumed

    La modélisation : une aide à la gestion de l'irrigation de précision : cas de l'orangeraie d'El-Salam, Nord Sinaï (Egypte)

    Des études sur l'économie de l'eau dans le Delta du Nil ont été menées en 2011-2013 à l'Institut de Recherche pour le Développement. L'orangeraie El-Salam a été choisie comme station d'étude "étalon". Ces études concernent le mode de gestion de l'irrigation de précision, avec comme perspective, la mise au point d'un modèle utilisable pour la gestion de l'irrigation d'autres cultures dans l'ensemble du Delta du Nil. Ce modèle de l'évapotranspiration réelle fonctionne avec un pas de temps d'une journée et utilise l'approche de Penman-Monteith qui tient compte de la spécificité d'un couvert. Les variables d'entrée du modèle sont la donnée météorologique standard issue des stations météorologiques du réseau national. Nous avons comparé les doses d'irrigation appliquées à l'orangeraie (I=994,30 mm.an-1 ; 2,72 mm.jour-1 ; le coefficient cultural Ea/EP=0,78) avec les besoins en eau issus du modèle (Eacalculée) pour proposer une gestion quotidienne de l'irrigation plus économe en eau. Les pertes en eau (drainage hors de la zone racinaire) sont de 94,570 m3 d'eau an-1 pour l'ensemble de la plantation de 80 ha, soit 1,182 m3 d'eau an-1 ha-1 (-12 %). Connaissant le coût élevé d'acheminement de l'eau vers les cultures, ces résultats peuvent être pris en compte dans l'aménagement hydraulique des sites de production

    Implementing MAS agreement processes based on consensus networks

    [EN] Consensus is a negotiation process where agents need to agree upon certain quantities of interest. The theoretical framework for solving consensus problems in dynamic networks of agents was formally introduced by Olfati-Saber and Murray, and is based on algebraic graph theory, matrix theory and control theory. Consensus problems are usually simulated using mathematical frameworks. However, implementation using multi-agent system platforms is a very difficult task due to problems such as synchronization, distributed finalization, and monitorization among others.     Application of semidefinite programming to maximize the spectral gap produced by node removal

We propose mathematical programming methods to maximize the spectral gap of a given network by removing a fixed number of nodes.     Physiological Fluid Specific Agglomeration Patterns Diminish Gold Nanorod Photothermal Characteristics

    Investigations into the use of gold nanorods (Au-NRs) for biological applications are growing exponentially due to their distinctive physicochemical properties, which make them advantageous over other nanomaterials. Au-NRs are particularly renowned for their plasmonic characteristics, which generate a robust photothermal response when stimulated with light at a wavelength matching their surface plasmon resonance. Numerous reports have explored this nanophotonic phenomenon for temperature driven therapies; however, to date there is a significant knowledge gap pertaining to the kinetic heating profile of Au-NRs within a controlled physiological setting. In the present study, the impact of environmental composition on Au-NR behavior and degree of laser actuated thermal production was assessed. Through acellular evaluation, we identified a loss of photothermal efficiency in biologically relevant fluids and linked this response to excessive particle aggregation and an altered Au-NR spectral profile. Furthermore, to evaluate the potential impact of solution composition on the efficacy of nano-based biological applications, the degree of targeted cellular destruction was ascertained in vitro and was found to be susceptible to fluid-dependent modifications. In summary, this study identified a diminution of Au-NR nanophotonic response in artificial physiological fluids that translated to a loss of application efficiency, pinpointing a critical concern that must be considered to advance in vivo, nano-based bio-applications
